Forests are complicated, natural systems that develop over generations.  Your management decisions directly impact the options, aesthetic appeal and health of the woods for you, your children and grandchildren, and for future landowners.

I’ve written several hundred plans over the course of my forestry career.  I strive to help landowners achieve their goals while setting realistic expectations based on years of careful observation of the region’s forests.

Unlike many plan writers, I also mark, advertise and oversee timber sales.  The practices I write into plans are rooted in an understanding of what is realistic and achievable on the ground.

I am a Wisconsin Certified Plan Writer and write Managed Forest Law (MFL) plans, and I’m also an NRCS Technical Service Provider and write EQIP funded plans.

Wisconsin Managed Forest Law (MFL) plans

  • Lower your property taxes by entering forest land in the MFL program.
  • Practices that are in the plan are often eligible for State or Federal cost sharing.

NRCS Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) funded forest management plans

  • EQIP provides cost sharing for plan writing that often covers all or most of the cost of the plan.
  • Practices that are in the plan are often eligible for State or Federal cost sharing.
  • EQIP funded plans can be entered in the MFL program.

It’s not necessary to enter a program to develop a forest management plan.   Some landowners simply want to know more about their woods to help them decide what actions, if any, to take.  A plan can range from simple to complex depending on the landowner’s needs and the condition of the forest.

Your management decisions directly impact the options, aesthetic appeal and health of the woods for you, your children and grandchildren, and for future landowners.  What do you wish the previous owner of your woods had done differently?

Timber sales are often used as a tool to reach a landowner’s goals like generating revenue or creating denser cover for deer.  When a timber sale is done correctly, it balances the often conflicting desires of a landowner.  Additionally, a responsible timber sale is forward thinking. It promotes a healthy, productive forest that is aesthetically pleasing and facilitates recreational opportunities in the long term.

I represent you, the landowner, in the timber sale process as an independent, professional consultant.  I don’t buy timber, and I’m not an employee of a mill or logger. I work to help you prioritize, blend and achieve your ownership goals.  My goal is to bring peace of mind to the often stressful timber sale process. Several studies show that working with a consulting forester often brings higher timber sale bid prices and greater owner satisfaction with the sale.  Most landowners who hire a consulting forester are satisfied with the service they received.
